195: Pinky Webb: Edu and I will always be friends

MANILA, Philippines - "Umagang Kay Ganda (UKG)" host Pinky Webb on Friday cleared the issue about her relationship with actor-TV host Edu Manzano.

In an interview during a press conference for UKG's newest hosts -- Andrei Felix, Phoemela Baranda, Iya Villania and 2010 Miss Universe 4th runner-up Venus Raj, Webb said that she and Manzano are just good friends even after reports came out that they are set to get married.

"Basta kami, magkaibigan pa rin kami. I don't think that will ever change," said Webb.

Webb and Manzano, who were sweethearts for 5 years, were set to get married in October 2009. Manzano, however, decided to run for the vice presidency, and this led to the couple's break-up.

The news anchor who refused to react to Manzano's announcement that they are back in each other's arms again just stressed that the former Optical Media Board chairman will always be an important part of her life.

"Ha? Umm... Basta Edu is and will always be important and a part of my life," Webb said.

Last month, Manzano and Webb both denied a report saying they got hitched overseas because they don't want their marriage to become like a carnival.

Webb said that as a news person, she felt that she has already given herself to the public. She stressed, however, that she wants to keep something for herself by keeping her family and love life private.

"Everyone knows what happens doon sa personal na buhay ko, sa love at saka sa pamilya ko. I really don't talk about it because I think sa ganoon I don't want to be in the news. And I hope that doesn't sound bad. Ayaw ko kasing palakihin pa na kapag may nagsabi na ganito, kayong dalawa o nagpakasal kayong dalawa... Minsan ayaw ko ng sagutin kasi kapag sasagutin ko pa ay lalabas pa ako bukas. Parang ganoon. I think I've given myself to the public as much as I can pero 'yong personal ko, I really want it to be mine. Not because kinahihiya ko, walang ganoon. Kaya lang, ayaw ko lang pinag-uusapan 'yung ganoon," Webb explained.

New 'Umagang Kay Ganda'

In the interview, Webb also said she was happy with UKG's newest hosts and format. Webb was all praises for her new co-hosts, particularly Raj and Villania.

"Magaling sila, si Iya at saka si Venus. They are willing to learn and very excited kaya maganda. Parang it rubs off on you kasi matagal-tagal ka na ng konti at sila 'yong bago. So masarap silang kasama, good vibes," she said.

"The inclusion of Venus and Iya was natural," she added.

Webb also extended her appreciation to Raj who bared that one of her influences in broadcasting is Webb.

"Venus, thank you ha. I'm flattered she said that. But 'yun, kasi sa UKG, sa akin 'yung news. I really try to do my best," Webb said.

Aside from delivering the latest news for UKG, Webb is also handling the show's new segment dubbed the "Webb Report," which features videos from concerned citizens.

Guesting on 'Showtime'

The broadcast journalist also said that she will also be one of the newest guest judges of the noontime talent show "Showtime."

"Oo, confirmed 'yon (bukas na). I'm excited," Webb said.

Asked if she's all set to do her performance for "Sampol," a part of the show where judges showcase their talents, Webb answered: "Hindi pa nga eh. Hindi ko alam kung sino ang magtuturo sa akin. Magpapatulong ako sa kanila (Showtime production staff)."
