MANILA, Philippines - Elizabeth Webb, the mother of convicted rapist and murderer Hubert Webb, denied their family had anything to do with allegations of Lauro Vizconde that a Supreme Court justice is lobbying among peers for the acquittal of Hubert and others convicted of involvement in the Vizconde massare.

However, Mrs. Webb admitted that Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio was a "minor" witness for the defense during the trial of Hubert many years ago.

Mrs. Webb said the allegations of Vizconde are meant to cast doubt on the proceedings. She said it's like rubbing salt on an open wound because they are playing on public opinion.

But, she said, her family is ready for any decision, and they are leaving it up to fate.

She added that it's not just Hubert who is the victim of injustice, but Vizconde as well, because the real culprit is still out there.

In an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer published on Friday, Vizconde said he fears an acquittal of those convicted in the Vizconde massacre, alleging that a justice was lobbying with other justices for the reversal of the ParaƱaque Regional Trial Court decision.

Supreme Court spokesman Midas Marquez said Carpio will not dignify Vizconde's allegation, and that justices are not influenced in favor of or against a particular case.

"Justice Carpio will not dignify that accusation with a comment," Marquez said. "That is pure speculation. Justice Carpio has already inhibited from this particular case. He already explained why he inhibited, and his inhibition was accepted by the court and therefore he is out of this case."

"That allegation will have to be proven. A serious allegation that has to be proved," Marquez added.
