122: News: Webb family also seeks justice

MANILA, Philippines - The release of former police officer Gerardo Biong has no effect on the case of Hubert Webb, the latter’s family believes.

Hubert’s father, former Senator Freddie Webb, said the only way Biong's release can help is to prove that the former policeman never served as either his body guard or driver.

“Tanungin nyo si Biong kung marunong siyang mag-drive, at kung may driver’s license yan. Nung 1995, wala. Di marunong mag-drive ‘yan paano ko magiging bodyguard?” he said.

If the courts did not believe the Webbs’ side when they convicted Hubert in the 1990s, his family hopes that the public will.

They have set up a Facebook page titled "Justice for Hubert Webb."

" The page has links, video clips, and documents that allegedly prove Hubert could not have participated in the Vizconde massacre last June 30, 1991," said Hubert's brother Fritz.

“We were looking for a venue where we have a level playing field. We have more than 3,100 members. Most of them are young. All of them ask, ‘how can something like this happen with so much evidence?' ” he added.

Among the videos on the page is a clip of Hubert in America, which was submitted to the court. The page also has a scanned copy of his driver’s license and a Federal Bureau of Investigation report that supposedly proves Hubert was in the US when the crime happened.

“Dumating na tayo sa final stage. Magiging arbiter na ngayon ang Supreme Court. If they look at the evidence, they will be convinced that indeed Hubert was there,” the former senator said.

Hubert’s mother, Elizabeth, said it is painful that the court did not believe some 400 documentsand 40 witnesses that the defense presented during the trial.

“I have complete faith that sooner or later we will have justice. The people of the Supreme Court are people that I hope will judge the case [based] on the merits,” she said.

While they pray that the Supreme Court will reverse the lower court’s conviction of Hubert, the Webb family said they are ready for any decision.

“If my son again is convicted, it's not because he is guilty, but the Lord wants me to carry a heavier cross and I will accept it,” Elizabeth said.

The Supreme Court is expected to release its decision on the Vizconde massacre soon. – Report from Karen Davila, ABS-CBN News; ANC
